Gua Lou, or Snakegourd Fruit, is the dried mature fruit of Trichosanthes kirilowii or T. rosthornii. Sweet, slightly bitter, and cold in nature, it is traditionally used in TCM to clear heat, resolve phlegm, expand the chest, and moisten the intestines. It is especially effective in conditions involving phlegm-heat accumulation in the lungs, chest oppression, and dry constipation.
